Post-Ascending Authority, Response #1

The first response to our ‘Post-Ascending Authority’ statement from SERVICES UNKNOWN comes from NYC based music & culture consultant Harry Benson

People now seek realness more than ever – politics, consumerism and the dubious media has all led to truth being dragged through the dirt. The general population is constantly lied to, from half truths to full blown deception. The faces at the top of the once powerful pyramid are no longer a trusted source of information, with a hidden agenda peddled behind every policy, trend and product.

YOUR AVERAGE CONSUMER TRUSTS THEIR PEERS MORE THAN THEIR TEACHERS, THEIR FRIENDS OVER THEIR FAMILY, AND THEIR CONTEMPORARIES OVER THEIR MENTORS

Even the youngest generation of consumer’s bullshit detector is fined tuned to a level never expected by corporations – and this is causing the mass shift to post-ascending authority. Your average consumer trusts their peers more than their teachers, their friends over their family, and their contemporaries over their mentors. Every hour, every day a news story slides down from the top of our phones – corruption, suspicion, and deceit plague the headlines.

IT MAKES RATIONALITY TO REJECT THE OLD (TRADITION) AND EMBRACE THE NEW (INNOVATION)

With all this engrained in the 21st century zeitgeist, it makes rationality to reject the old (tradition) and embrace the new (innovation). Learning is moving to a democratized activity. 50% of young people prefer independent methods such as YouTube videos over institutional learning – a clear indicator of the lack of faith in the ‘altruistic’ educational set up and information systems.

It’s a short leap for this to apply to the everyday objects that surround us – from the beauty products we use to the shoes we wear. Brands are only just beginning to adapt to this new authority and the rapid haste it brings to trends and feedback. “The customer is always right” has never rang more true, only now it’s evolved from satisfaction to dictation. For the first time post the industrial revolution, individuals and small business can innovate quicker than the industry leaders. These are the ones defining the next jacket trend, music genre, or en vogue fragrance. Power to the people, power to every single person in pursuit of their truth.
